In this video I look at two realistic ways Blizzard could make that happen. The first would be a native Battle.net client for Linux, with Blizzard shipping and maintaining its own tested Proton/Wine runtime for supported games. WoW and several other Blizzard games already work remarkably well through compatibility layers, so Blizzard wouldn't necessarily need native Linux ports from day one. After six or twelve months, Blizzard could use actual Linux player numbers to decide whether investing in native Vulkan support would make financial sense. The other route may be even simpler: put World of Warcraft: Forever on Steam. Blizzard already has several games on Steam, Steam handles Proton and updates on Linux, and WoW Forever now has proper controller support. That makes the Steam Deck particularly interesting — WoW already works on it, but the current installation process is nowhere near the simple "buy, download, play" experience expected from a handheld console. I also look at the business side: Valve's cut, WoW subscriptions, existing MMO examples, and the possibility of selling the Skyborne Pack on Steam while keeping game time tied to the player's Battle.net account.
